This Simple Grilled Cheese Sandwich is crispy on the outside and melty on the inside. Using mayonnaise on the bread creates a golden crust while keeping the cheese perfectly gooey—an easy, comforting classic in just minutes.

Ingredients

  • 2 slices of white bread (or choice)
  • 1 tsp mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp softened butter (for finishing in the oven)
  • 3 slices American cheese
  • 1 slice Gruyère cheese

Instructions

  1. Prep the bread: Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the outside of each slice of bread. This helps create a golden, crispy crust.
  2. Assemble the sandwich: On the inside of the bread, layer the cheeses: start with two slices of American, then Gruyère, and finish with another slice of American. (Optional: season lightly with salt and pepper).
  3. Cook on stovetop: Heat an oven-safe skillet over medium-low heat, then reduce heat to the lowest setting. Place the sandwich in the skillet and cook slowly until the bread is golden brown and the cheese starts melting, about 3–4 minutes per side.
  4. Finish in the oven: Transfer the sandwich to the oven to continue cooking. (Optional: Spread 1 tsp of softened butter on top of each sandwich). Bake at 350°F for 2–5 minutes to fully melt the cheese and give a lightly toasted finish.
  5. Serve: Slice in half and enjoy immediately while warm and gooey.

Tip: Low heat is key—if it’s too high, the bread can burn before the cheese melts. Mayo doesn’t burn like butter but still gives a delicious crispy crust.

Serve warm straight from the skillet for the ultimate comfort snack or lunch. Crispy, cheesy, and effortless, this grilled cheese proves that simple ingredients can make the best meals.
